NPFC member remarks as delivered to NUSD Board on 8/20/02
Good evening. I want to thank the Trustees for allowing me to share my views on these important issues.
I am a 15-year Novato resident and the mother of three wonderful and lively teenage boys, two of whom will be attending San Marin High School this year. I am also a member of the NPFC. (Novato Parents and Family Coalition)
My sons, and your children, will be spending more than 1100 hours in the classroom this school year. I am here because I am deeply concerned as a mother and a citizen about the introduction of highly controversial materials and programs into these classrooms. I have worked hard at home to instill certain morals in my children. I don't believe it is the right of the school to undermine these.
My first and foremost concern is that these 1100 hours be spent teaching our children core academic subjects including math, science, literature, language, history, music and art. It would be irresponsible of the School Board to allow the introduction of highly controversial materials and subjects into the classroom when the community is so deeply divided on these sensitive matters.
You must understand that the underlying messages communicated by these materials runs contrary to the morals held by many of the families who live and pay taxes in this community. You must uphold our rights as parents to determine the quality and nature of our children's education, especially as it relates to teachings on the family, which are critical to the fabric of society.
These truths are so self-evident that even the United Nations' Declaration of Human Rights recognizes them in Article 16. And I quote….
"Men and women of full age, without any limitation due to race, nationality or religion, have the right to marry and to found a family….The family is the natural and fundamental group unit of society and is entitled to protection by society and state."
And again from Article 26 of the United Nations Declaration:
"Parents have a prior right to choose the kind of education that shall be given their children"
In closing I would ask you, the Trustees, to uphold these rights and preserve the quality of education here in Novato.
Thank you for your support.
